So day three of working with Jeff and Laura. I have came a little closer to the final product for our collaborative project, here is a image of it cleaned up more. We will be deconstructing video clips along with our performance. I am still using jit.scissors and jit.glue to grid out the video clip.
So we have been cracking for our up-coming group project incorporating our ideas from the reading. We have been going over chapter three ‘Multiplying Media’. The biggest understanding that we have all gotten out of it has been the idea of replicating reality. Or the idea of art and video being self referential. Some of the performance artists in the chapter discussed incorporating pre-recorded video of their process to be projected during the completed and polished performance. So in Max, we began creating a patch that deconstructs various video clips to create a composite video, one that incorporates apart of the process with the final version. Here is a screen shot of the patch in its baby stages. Sorry at this point I will not be sharing any of the the code with you all, but it is using. jit.scissors and jit.glue.
I found a patch from Max Objects Database (maxobjects.com) It is supposed to control the various inputs into the arduino with numerical data. Although I am not sure how this is working exactly. But hopefully someone can find how to interface this patch with the pico and control numerical data.
This is the second patch I created for the Afternoon Delight Karaoke performance. Like the first one, this is also driven by the audio input of the karaoke performer. But there is a departure from the first project. I am reinterpreting the iconic ipod commercials. In the commercials we see silhouetted dancers moving about the screen while wearing the white earphones that ipod has trademarked. In this piece I am claiming that visual back to the live sense of performed music. Rather than the pre-recorded isolated sense of listening to your ipod. The audio drives the speed and change of the various video sequences. I am also simply poking fun at the consumer driven culture that we have come to recognize as being ‘normal’. I wanted to re-interpret videos that have been received as iconic and associated with a particular way of enjoying music and subverting that to a live singer that allows the entire audience to participate in the music that they are listening to, rather than through head-phones.
Here is an image of the patch created in Max/Msp/Jitter. . .
This is also a video clip of the art work in action.
This is also the compressed text format of the patch itself. You would need to create your own video footage to use in the patch as mine is not included.
Here are a few excerpts from and interactive Video DJ performance that I was involved in with Afternoon Delight Karaoke at the Walnut room in Denver, CO. The interactive video pieces are driven by user/performers audio input. I had created the interface using Max/Msp/Jitter, building a custom program that reads a video device input and audio input. I am aiming the video camera at the performer, while simultaneously the projector is displaying the out put of the live video footage. An interesting thing happens however, a mirror effect takes over as the live footage is also recoding itself. The sound input is changing the distorted effects in the video, such as contrast and saturation.
Here is an image of how the Max/Msp/Jitter patch itself looks.
If you would also like a copy of the patch, it is copied in text format below.

One of the original developers of MAX/MSP Miller Puckette, no longer works for the software company that continues to sell his ideas. He has since created Pure Data an open source software similar to MAX/MSP. What creative rights does Puckette have on creating MAX? Should he continue to receive compensation from the software company? (im not sure if he currently does or not) Is there a difference between the creation of ‘art’ or a software?
On pdf page 3, Claudia Gianetti has categorized interactivity into three different models, Discreet systems, Reactive systems and Interactive systems. Out of her definitions of interactivity where do you see your work falling into? Do you have a better definition for a system for Interactivity?
