another tracking experiment

I have just completed a little merger. I have put one of rebecca’s patches in connection with this artist, Josh Goldberg, who had posted his odd sound producing machine created in Max/Msp. It is all based on the cycle object in Msp and it is doing some fun things.
So I had the tracker simply connect the bang to numeric input messages to then be read into the cycling sound producer. Its pretty cool.

I have included my patch, along with the COMBMADE patch so you can play with it your self. I apologize for all of the patch cords, the guy went a little crazy with the connections. ((But he hid them so that when the patch is locked you dont have to see the craziness. It is not a presentation mode. Does anyone know how to do this? ))

new Max patch

So I had mixed Sean’s Facetracker patch with jit.scissors. What I would hope to use this for would be so that the view has a larger screen and so more faces could be viewed at once and get a larger set of data. Right now I have the number of faces going to change the brightness output in the second window.

Chapter three/theoretical view on project 2

The chapter Multiplying Media from Nick Kaye’s Multi-Media had discussed the inter-relation that various medias and forms of presenting those medias. The chapter also discusses multi media, specifically those medias that intrinsically deal with the ephemeral, and the various implications that artist have discovered in using those medias with performance. “ Since the mid-1970’s and following the close link between video art, video installation and performance, the implication of the media’s division of presence, action, place and representation has been integrated into overtly theatrical practices.” (pg. 163) As Kaye describes several different artist who exemplify this mixing of media and theatrical performance; one group of artists had stood out the most to us. The Wooster Group, a theater group under the direction of Elizabeth LeCompte, began intergrading the ideas of theater and of video art together in the late 1980’s. At first commenting on the practices of ‘Living Theater’ the group created performative pieces in  which, “the focus on authenticity of the performers commitment, experience and presence in performance also responded to the politics of living theater” (pg. 165) The Wooster Group had begun to film their rehearsals and included the clips into the final performance. Their pice titled Rumstick Road had emphasised their previous performances where their personal history as theater company and their process of creating the final work is displayed simultaneously with the recordings of the past rehearsals. Their performance called the Trilogy a performance and stage play about performance and stage plays. “The Wooster Group’s re-use of material plays between ‘repetition’ and ‘reproduction’, as live and recorded performances are layered to articulate the group’s re-staging of their own and other’s work.” (pg. 168)
For our project we took these ideas quite literally as speaking about the nature of performance and of the process of developing a final product. We began with the idea of layering our process on top of what ever our final result was. So in a similar fashion of the Wooster Group, we starting filming our discussion of our process. In doing so we had also used something from popular culture that had also created something self referential. In an episode of the Fox animated television show Family Guy, the characters strive to create their own cartoon. Being that the show is itself a cartoon, their process is self referential. Similarly the dialogue of the characters plays out their thought process and endeavors in creating the cartoon. For our performance and process we have recorded ourselves parodying the Family Guy script literally, as well as including pre-recoded clips of our own process. As the various video clips play before our audience, we will simultaneously be talking in a scripted manner about our whole process in creating the project and performance. As the various video clips and performance begin to overlay both visually and audibly over one another, a deconstruction of these various processes begins to happen. The audience begins to recognize the circular narrative, pointing to that processes of art and creation do not truly have a linear form. We are questioning the nature of creative process and of so called ‘low brow’ art and popular culture in our project. As well as the ideas of liner narratives in performance.

Final Stage of Project 2

So after many drafts, here is a photo of Laura, Jeff and my patch. This image is of it in presentation mode, because there are so many patch cords everywhere. We had discovered that you can replace a video with another one in the same jit.movie object. So through out the piece we have four different clips, where most of them are replacing the space of another. We had also created a separate function for the audio, so that the movie clips are not dependent on that audio. They can run separately as needed or at the same time. Picture 2

Next Stage of Expirements

So day three of working with Jeff and Laura. I have came a little closer to the final product for our collaborative project, here is a image of it cleaned up more. We will be deconstructing video clips along with our performance. I am still using jit.scissors and jit.glue to grid out the video clip. Picture 3

Experiments with Jeff and Laura

So we have been cracking for our up-coming group project incorporating our ideas from the reading. We have been going over chapter three ‘Multiplying Media’. The biggest understanding that we have all gotten out of it has been the idea of replicating reality. Or the idea of art and video being self referential. Some of the performance artists in the chapter discussed incorporating pre-recorded video of their process to be projected during the completed and polished performance. So in Max, we began creating a patch that deconstructs various video clips to create a composite video, one that incorporates apart of the process with the final version. Here is a screen shot of the patch in its baby stages. Sorry at this point I will not be sharing any of the the code with you all, but it is using. jit.scissors and jit.glue. Picture 1

Max Arduino Input

I found a patch from Max Objects Database (maxobjects.com) It is supposed to control the various inputs into the arduino with numerical data. Although I am not sure how this is working exactly.  But hopefully someone can find how to interface this patch with the pico and control numerical data.

Karaoke documentation #2

ipod, upod, weallpod

This is the second patch I created for the Afternoon Delight Karaoke performance. Like the first one, this is also driven by the audio input of the karaoke performer. But there is a departure from the first project. I am reinterpreting the iconic ipod commercials. In the commercials we see silhouetted dancers moving about the screen while wearing the white earphones that ipod has trademarked. In this piece I am claiming that visual back to the live sense of performed music. Rather than the pre-recorded isolated sense of listening to your ipod. The audio drives the speed and change of the various video sequences. I am also simply poking fun at the consumer driven culture that we have come to recognize as being ‘normal’. I wanted to re-interpret videos that have been received as iconic and associated with a particular way of enjoying music and subverting that to a live singer that allows the entire audience to participate in the music that they are listening to, rather than through head-phones.

Here is an image of the patch created in Max/Msp/Jitter. . .

Picture 3

This is also a video clip of the art work in action.

This is also the compressed text format of the patch itself. You would need to create your own video footage to use in the patch as mine is not included.

Eternal Sound Reflection

Here are a few excerpts from and interactive Video DJ performance that I was involved in with Afternoon Delight Karaoke at the Walnut room in Denver, CO. The interactive video pieces are driven by user/performers audio input. I had created the interface using Max/Msp/Jitter, building a custom program that reads a video device input and audio input. I am aiming the video camera at the performer, while simultaneously the projector  is displaying the out put of the live video footage. An interesting thing happens however, a mirror effect takes over as the live footage is also recoding itself. The sound input is changing the distorted effects in the video, such as contrast and saturation.

Here is an image of how the Max/Msp/Jitter patch itself looks.

If you would also like a copy of the patch, it is copied in text format below.

question #2 from Digital Interactive Installations

Filed under: reading questions — digitalsee @ 9:43 pm

One of the original developers of MAX/MSP Miller Puckette, no longer works for the software company that continues to sell his ideas. He has since created Pure Data an open source software similar to MAX/MSP. What creative rights does Puckette have on creating MAX? Should he continue to receive compensation from the software company? (im not sure if he currently does or not) Is there a difference between the creation of ‘art’ or a software?

question #1 from Digital Interactive Installations

On pdf page 3, Claudia Gianetti has categorized interactivity into three different models, Discreet systems, Reactive systems and Interactive systems. Out of her definitions of interactivity where do you see your work falling into? Do you have a better definition for a system for Interactivity?

eternal reflection

I have been playing with the Jitter capabilities of DV camera as an source of input with in MAX/MSP/JITTER. After pointing the camera in the direction of the computer (where the footage was being outputted) It began replicating itself into vanishing point. Here are a few screen shots of this experiment that I had also done with Juan. . .

inspiring artists

Here are a few digital artist that I have found that are truly doing amazing digital and performance work today. . .

Benoît Maubrey

he was born in 1952 in Washington, D.C. and currently lives in Baitz, Germany.  He has had numerous shows and exhibitions all around the world. But he is perhaps more famously known for his Audio Ballerinas. He creates an interactive tutu or other clothing for the performer to wear and they interface with while dancing and acting in other traditional roles of performing. He uses electromagnetic and solar waves as some of his sources for his audio that is used in the outfits. I enjoy the work because he takes  traditional roles of performance and art and subverts them to bend towards a new idea of combining, sound, performer and technology. I would love to find a way to use sensors and audio transmissions as the dominate form in my digital art. I appreciate the jarring and absurd nature of the sounds that his outfits produce, but i would love to find a way to integrate sound more so that it makes a more stylized music form.

Miya Masaoka

She is a musician, digital artist, composer, performer and teacher from Japan. Her work is primarily influenced by the traditional Japanese string instrument called the Koto. She manipulates sound and music in an interesting way that the instrument and the electronic sound become harmonic complements for each other. Because I am also a musician she inspires me to seek out ways in which i can manipulate sounds of instruments that I have spent years playing. There is also something very meditative about her work. The Los Angeles Times refers to her as “Masterful and conceptually restless koto player Miya Masaoka has made it her business to usher the Japanese instrument into contemporary contexts, combining respect for tradition with new musical applications.” This is something that I want to strive for in digital art, reinterpreting the traditions that we have made as a society into a new form using the newest technology available. There is something about using new technology in art and life that expresses a certain transience of time that can only last for a moment. and should only last for a moment.

Please visit her website for press releases, videos and photos.

1st attempt at Karaoke project

So this is my 1st attempt at Karaoke project. I tried to keep everything simple, but it is not quite fully automated yet. I also used a MSP sfplay object for playing aiff files. The link that is posted in the following is a link to download SWITCH for mac. ( this is an awesome program that you can switch and convert tons of different audio files. For instance i created an aiff file from a Mv4 of one of my fav bands on my i tunes) Anyways i have also included the patch in text format for download, let me know what you think!

make sure you click on the link for FREE download.

Patches week #3

So with this patch (started by Rebbecca) I have added the ability to control the speed and pan using the mouse X, Y coordinates on the screen. . .

Picture 1

This next patch was taken from a website, it uses a MIDI keyboard to produce a sound, that sound is then controlled by the ‘poly’ object that changes the pitch of the sound. I have modified it by adding a multi-slider that further changes the sound on four different levels of pitch, attach, sustain and release. . . Picture 3

here is a link to the web site to also download the patch (along with others) if you would like.

Patches week #1

Here is a path I found that controls the wii remote as a bluetooth device for Mac’s. Although I have not quite figured out what is going on I am starting to understand the ‘inlet’ function to allow multiple patches communicate with each other. Here is a screen capture  of the patchPicture 1

I also modified the notes patch we made in class. By placing non- intiger numbers ( such as a decimal) into the vale system for the notes, it creates a chaotic sound because the slider is trying to understand where that decimal place would located at. I also placed it to have real time control over the metro, and when you go into negative numbers it creates the crazy jump in pitch. here is a screen capture for that

proposal project #5

Filed under: Uncategorized — digitalsee @ 5:51 am

The ideas of a database bring to mind a cold and calculating collection of information. But this information and the practices of databases bring a lot of information to audiences about many different subjects. On the opposite end of the spectrum, the ideas of creating a self portrait is almost anything but cold and calculating. Even creating a self portrait using drawn mediums that is supposed to have a ‘factual’ photo-realistic have a resonance with in the work that reflects something human.
I have spent the better part of two years creating self portraits with photography, drawing and film. It has only been recently that I have began to turn away from creating self portraits and attempted to discover another way of communicating my ideas.
But I am drawn to beginning the process of self portraiture again, this time with a different mind and different tools. Creating a database that is a self portrait brings many connotations to mind. There is something scientific about the database and I am hoping to incorporate that scientific inspection into my own self image and identity.
I will be scanning not only abstracted images of myself, but also of my objects, possessions and mementos. I would like to keep the layout and navigation of the website simple, so that the images are able to push forward. I am also using a simpler design to help promote the idea that this database is something scientific, regardless of it being a self portrait.
Although I am unsure of the amount of images that I will be scanning, but I am hoping to make this project encompass a large amount of visual material in my life, even if it is only a few different aspects

proposal for project #4

Filed under: Uncategorized — digitalsee @ 4:13 am

Ah Cartography,  apparently there is a whole mass of people who are obsessed with maps. I personally do not understand this, I guess that I like maps, I like gaining information from them. Other than that, there is no part of me that inspires me to begin some club dedicated  to looking at maps. However, in preparing for this project I did discover that I enjoy the process of finding and searching. Forging my own path is a far more fascinating process that looking at a map that some one else had created. Yet searching through hundreds of images found on google search, using keywords like maps, ritual, discover, find, lead me nowhere. But in the process of trying to find an idea I realized that my process was my idea. Every time any of us use a search engine we are creating history or a visual map of our key words.

My project is based upon the visual process of searching through images on the Internet. I will make sense of the various tangents that I follow by creating a map of the ‘places’ that I have visited and to the ‘locations’ that this map has lead me to. I would also like to make this web based project interactive for the viewer to also choose a path through the map that I have created and in turn creating their own map through my work. Using screen-shots of my own discoveries as my source imagery, I hope to capture the process that so many of us have experienced in searching through ideas on images on the internet, each of us creating our own maps of our findings.

Here are some links that I had found nteresting during my research of maps.
